Tim Powers is one of the most important, successful and influential writers in contemporary fantasy. His Novels deal with identity, heroism, art, magic and politics.
His two most famous and important novels are LAST CALL and THE ANUBIS GATES.
THE ANUBIS GATES is the story of Brendan Doyle, a modern day literature professor who is transported to 19th century England, where he must deal with forces who aim to disrupt the very fabric of the British nation. These powers have already driven King George III mad, and now intend to send a brainwashed Lord Byron to kill him. Doyle must also dead with the insane millionaire with whom he arrived in the past, who now wants to use his funds and knowledge to dominate the world. THE ANUBIS GATES is the winner of the Philip K. Dick award, the Prix Apollo, the Readercon award and the Israeli Geffen award. In a poll conducted by Locus Magazine in 1998, THE ANUBIS GATES was voted 14th in the all time best fantasy novel category.
LAST CALL is the story of Scott Crane, a professional gambler who quit ten years ago. But now he's having nightmares about a strange Poker game that took place on a houseboat on Lake Mead in 1969. The game in which he won a fortune twenty-one years ago is, in a supernatural sense, not finished yet. The money he took home was actually in exchange for his life... and perhaps his soul. And there's one hand yet to be played. From the Poker clubs of Los Angeles through the mythic wasteland of the Mojave Desert to Bugsy Siegel's magical city of Las Vegas, Crane's odyssey leads him to one last Poker game, a game that involves Tarot card and the souls of the players much more than the chips on the table.
Powers' other books deal with Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Kim Philby, and a variety of other characters, some historical, some magical, some frightening.
Powers' novels have won two Philip K. Dick awards, two World Fantasy award, three Locus awards, one Mythopoetic award, one International Horror Guild award, one Geffen award, and several others.
Tim Powers is a regular teacher in the highly prestigious Clarion writer's workshop.
